Differences between GTI and R engine
From MQB Wiki
The ea888 Gen3 engine found in the Mk7 Golf R boasts several upgrades versus the ea888 Gen3 found in the GTI:
Head:
- Different alloy: withstands higher thermal stress
- Hollow exhaust valves: with high Ni content and nitride coating for superior heat and wear resistance
- Improved valve seats: enhanced temperature stability and wear resistance
- Adapted exhaust camshaft: optimized valve timing
Pistons and Cooling:
- Reduced compression ratio: 9.3:1 (versus 9.5:1) with redesigned pistons
- High-flow piston cooling jets: for improved heat dissipation
Fuel Delivery:
- High-pressure DI injectors: with increased flow rate for optimal fuel injection
Turbocharging:
- Larger IHI IS38 turbocharger
- Increased charge pressure: up to 17.4 PSI (1.2 bar)
- Larger turbo charge cooler
Cooling System:
- High-performance main radiator: ensures efficient engine cooling
- 1-2 auxiliary radiators (depending on region): provide additional cooling capacity
